Police catch Florida man who crashed into tree and swam from officers

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A Florida man has been arrested Wednesday afternoon after allegedly crashing into a tree and swimming away from officers in a river.

According to the Fort Myers Police Department (FMPD), the crash occurred around 1:12 p.m. at 2710 McGregor Boulevard.

The man identified as 40-year-old Donald Lehew ran from the scene, FMPD said.

According to FMPD, Traffic Patrol and Marine officers were able to catch Lehew after he tried to hide and swim away from officers.

Lehew faces charges of hit and run with property damage, resisting an officer and driving on a suspended license.
